Pontillo's Pest Prevention

What You Need to Know About Integrated Pest Management (continued)...

University of Kentucky Entomologists tell us most pests found inside either flew or crawled in from outside.  The following "pest proofing" steps are recommended...

  • Install door sweeps at the base of all exterior entry doors.
  • Seal openings where utility lines enter the foundation and siding.
  • Seal cracks around windows and doors.
  • Repair damaged screens.
  • Install 1/4" wire mesh over any openings that could serve as points of entry for, birds, bats, or rodents.
  • Consider an exterior barrier treatment with insecticides.

UGA Entomologists offer the following "house keeping" recommendations...

  • Don't provide food for pests - Clean up promptly after meals.
  • Don't provide water for pests - Repair leaks if discovered.
  • Don't provide shelter for pests - Avoid clutter which can provide pests with harborage.
  • Keep pests out - Be mindful of picking up and bringing in "hitchhikers".
